Background of the Study
Political party mergers have been a recurring feature of Nigeria’s political landscape, especially in the context of national elections. In Kebbi State, including Yelwa Local Government Area (LGA), parties have occasionally merged to form coalitions in an effort to increase their electoral chances. The rationale behind such mergers is often to consolidate resources, appeal to a broader electorate, and compete more effectively against dominant political parties (Eze & Bello, 2024). Mergers can alter the dynamics of local elections by shifting party affiliations, changing voter loyalties, and affecting overall electoral strategies. However, the success of these mergers is not always guaranteed, and their impact on election outcomes remains a subject of debate (Abubakar & Ibrahim, 2023). This study will examine the influence of political party mergers on elections in Yelwa, focusing on their effects on voter behavior, party competition, and electoral results.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
While political party mergers have occurred in various parts of Nigeria, there is limited research on how these mergers specifically influence elections in local government areas like Yelwa. The problem is that, despite the potential benefits of party mergers, their impact on electoral outcomes in Yelwa has not been thoroughly analyzed. This study will investigate how party mergers in Yelwa have shaped electoral results, particularly in the context of the 2023 elections.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of political party mergers on electoral outcomes in Yelwa.

  2. To examine how party mergers influence voter behavior and party loyalty in Yelwa.

  3. To explore the strategies used by merged parties in Yelwa to increase electoral success.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How do political party mergers affect electoral outcomes in Yelwa?

  2. What is the impact of party mergers on voter behavior and party loyalty in Yelwa?

  3. How do merged parties adjust their strategies to enhance electoral success in Yelwa?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Political party mergers significantly influence electoral outcomes in Yelwa.

  2. Party mergers lead to changes in voter behavior and party loyalty in Yelwa.

  3. Merged parties use specific strategies to increase their chances of electoral success in Yelwa.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will contribute to understanding the role of political party mergers in shaping electoral outcomes at the local government level in Nigeria. The findings could provide valuable insights for political parties considering mergers, as well as policymakers seeking to enhance the effectiveness and competitiveness of Nigeria’s political system.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on the impact of political party mergers on elections in Yelwa LGA, Kebbi State, with a particular emphasis on the 2023 elections. It will not explore other regions or national-level mergers. A limitation of the study is that it relies on party reports and voter surveys, which may not fully represent the complexity of electoral dynamics in Yelwa.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Political Party Mergers: The consolidation of two or more political parties into a single entity to strengthen their electoral chances.

  • Electoral Outcomes: The results of elections, including the success or failure of candidates and political parties.

  • Voter Loyalty: The tendency of voters to support a particular party or candidate consistently over time.
